This 5-day Murchison Falls and Jinja safari follows the Nile through some of northern and eastern Uganda’s most memorable landscapes. Your journey begins with the wildlife of Murchison Falls National Park, where game drives take you across open savannah in search of giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and predators. A boat safari then takes you along the Nile towards the base of the mighty Murchison Falls, where the river squeezes through a narrow gorge before plunging over the rocks. From Murchison Falls, the journey continues east towards Jinja, where the Nile begins its journey from Lake Victoria. Here, you can take a boat trip around the Source of the Nile and enjoy the river from a completely different setting. Along the way, there is time to track southern white rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, stand above the powerful Murchison Falls and spend a full morning on safari in the Buligi area, one of the park’s key game-viewing areas. The final part of the trip takes you to Jinja for riverside scenery and activities along the Nile, with white-water rafting and other adventure activities available for travellers who want to finish the safari on a more active note. It is a good choice for travellers who want to combine Uganda’s wildlife with the Nile without committing to a much longer safari itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala to Murchison Falls via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Your safari starts with an early pickup from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Meet your driver-guide and set off north to Nakasongola and Murchison Falls National Park. Your first major stop is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you will head out with a trained ranger for a rhino tracking walk. This is a chance to leave the vehicle behind and get closer to the southern white rhinos as they move through the sanctuary’s savannah and woodland. The ranger will lead you on foot while you watch the rhinos in their natural surroundings and learn more about their behaviour and daily routine. After the rhino tracking experience, stop for lunch before continuing north to Murchison Falls National Park. The journey from Kampala to the park takes several hours, so the afternoon drive gives you time to settle into the changing scenery as you approach the park.

Once inside Murchison Falls National Park, continue to the Top of Murchison Falls. This is where the Nile is squeezed through a narrow rocky gorge before plunging into the valley below. Walk between the viewpoints, feel the spray from the falls, and take in the power of the river as it forces its way through the gorge. From the Top of the Falls, continue to your lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening after the day’s drive.

Overnight: Pakuba Safari Lodge
Meal plan: Dinner and breakfast

Day 2, Murchison Falls Game Drive and Nile Boat Safari

Start the day with an early breakfast before heading into the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park for a morning game drive. The drive takes you through the open savannah of the Buligi Peninsula, one of the best areas in the park for wildlife viewing. The plains stretch between the Victoria Nile and Albert Nile, creating a beautiful setting for an early morning drive as the wildlife becomes active. Keep an eye out for Nubian giraffes feeding around the acacia woodland, elephants moving across the plains, and large herds of buffalo. Uganda kobs, hartebeests, oribis, waterbucks and warthogs are also common sights across the grasslands. Where antelope gather, lions may be nearby, while finding a leopard or spotted hyena takes a little more patience and careful searching. Return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax before the afternoon activity.

Game Drives in Murchison Falls National Park

Later, drive to Paraa for a boat safari along the Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. The round trip takes about 3 hours, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the river and the wildlife along its banks. Hippos gather in the water while Nile crocodiles lie along the sandy banks. Elephants and buffalo often come down to drink, and the river is also excellent for birdwatching. Keep your binoculars ready for African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, egrets and other waterbirds. As the boat moves upstream, the river gradually narrows towards Fajao Gorge. The journey ends with a close view of the Nile forcing its way through the narrow gorge at the base of Murchison Falls before the boat turns back downstream. Return to your lodge in the evening and settle in after a full day of game viewing and time on the Nile.

Day 3, Murchison Falls to Jinja

After breakfast, check out and begin the drive from Murchison Falls towards Jinja. This is a long transfer day, so the focus is on making the journey comfortably rather than trying to fit in several major activities along the way. Travel south through central Uganda, stopping for lunch, refreshments and photographs along the way before continuing east towards Jinja. As you leave the drier savannah landscapes around Murchison Falls, the scenery gradually becomes greener, with farmland and more settled countryside as you approach the Lake Victoria basin. Jinja sits on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, where the Nile begins its journey north. It is one of Uganda’s main destinations for Nile activities and makes a good place to slow down after the long drive. Arrive in Jinja later in the afternoon or evening, check in to your hotel, and relax.

Overnight: Jinja

Day 4, Source of the Nile and Jinja Activities

After breakfast, head to the Source of the Nile for a guided boat trip. Getting out on the water gives you a clear view of the point where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria and begins its journey north, and the boat ride makes the setting much more enjoyable than simply viewing the river from the shore. After the boat trip, spend some time around Jinja or choose another activity depending on how you would like to spend the day. Quad biking, horseback riding, kayaking and tubing are among the options available for travellers who want to add a little more activity to their stay.

Optional white-water rafting

For travellers looking for a bigger Nile adventure, white-water rafting can take up most of the day. Rather than trying to fit rafting alongside all the other activities, it works better as the main activity for the day, with the Source of the Nile visit moved to another suitable time in the itinerary. Return to your hotel in the evening and relax after the day’s activities.

Overnight: Jinja

Day 5, Ssezibwa Falls and Return to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, leave Jinja and start your journey back towards Kampala or Entebbe. If your flight or onward travel gives you enough time, make a stop at Ssezibwa Falls along the way. Ssezibwa Falls is a peaceful place to finish your safari, with the river, rocks, vegetation and surrounding paths offering a chance to stretch your legs before reaching the city. A local guide can take you around the falls and share the Buganda traditions and stories connected to this special place. After your visit, continue towards Kampala, stopping for lunch along the way depending on your timing. From Kampala, continue to your hotel or on to Entebbe for your flight. If you are flying out of Uganda on the same day, allow plenty of time for the journey to Entebbe International Airport. The Ssezibwa Falls stop works best when your international flight is late enough to leave a comfortable margin for the drive and possible traffic around Kampala and Entebbe. Your guide will drop you at your hotel or the airport, bringing your 5-day Murchison Falls and Jinja safari to an end.
