This 3-day Mount Elgon hiking and Sipi Falls tour takes you into the highlands of eastern Uganda for mountain scenery, forest walks and the Sipi waterfalls, without the time and commitment needed for a full summit expedition. From Kampala or Entebbe, the journey takes you to the Sipi area, where you’ll spend your days walking the lower slopes of Mount Elgon National Park. Mount Elgon rises to 4,321 metres at Wagagai Peak, but this trip focuses on the easier forest trails around Kapkwai, with time to see caves, viewpoints and the surrounding mountain scenery. You’ll also explore Sipi Falls, where the river drops through 3 waterfall levels along the basalt cliffs. Before heading back to Kampala, you’ll have time for a local Arabica coffee experience, giving you a chance to see how coffee is grown and prepared in the area. With comfortable lodge accommodation instead of nights in mountain camps, this is a good way to enjoy the Sipi and Mount Elgon area while still keeping the trip active and manageable over three days.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Kampala or Entebbe to Sipi Falls
Your Mount Elgon adventure starts with an early morning pickup from Kampala or Entebbe. Meet your driver-guide and set off east through Mukono and Jinja, continuing towards Mbale and the Mount Elgon highlands. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on your starting point, traffic, and stops along the way. As you leave the busier parts of central Uganda behind, the scenery gradually changes, with green countryside and rolling hills leading you towards the higher slopes around Sipi. Have lunch along the way before continuing to Sipi Falls. Once you arrive, settle into your lodge and take some time to relax after the drive. If you still have enough daylight, take a gentle walk around the Sipi area and enjoy your first views of the waterfalls, cliffs and surrounding farmland. Keep this first afternoon easy so you are well rested for the hiking ahead.

Day 2, Mount Elgon Forest Hike and Sipi Falls
Start the morning with an early breakfast before driving to the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, where you’ll meet your ranger guide and begin your walk into the Mount Elgon forest. The hike takes you through the montane forest, with trails leading to caves, waterfalls and viewpoints along the mountain slopes. Your ranger will take you along a route that suits the time you have and the conditions on the day, so you can enjoy the forest without committing to a multi-day climb to the summit. As you walk, keep an eye on the trees for black and white colobus and blue monkeys, while mountain birds move through the canopy. The forest changes as you climb, making the walk as much about the mountain scenery and vegetation as it is about what you encounter along the trail. After the forest hike, return to Sipi for lunch and some time to relax.

In the afternoon, set out for a guided walk to Sipi Falls. The Sipi River tumbles over 3 main waterfalls as it drops through the valley, creating some beautiful viewpoints along the way. Your guide will take you along the trail to the waterfalls, with the walk involving some steep sections and uneven ground. The paths around the falls can become slippery after rain, so comfortable walking shoes with a good grip are important. Return to your lodge in the evening, have dinner and settle in for your second night in Sipi.
Day 3, Sipi Coffee Experience and Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, spend the morning around Sipi getting to know the local coffee-growing communities on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon. Take a walk through a local coffee garden and follow the process from picking the ripe coffee cherries to washing, drying, roasting, and finally preparing the coffee. You’ll have time to see how coffee is grown and handled locally before enjoying a fresh cup. After the coffee experience, check out and begin the drive back towards Kampala or Entebbe. Stop for lunch along the way as you continue through Mbale and Jinja. Depending on traffic and where you are staying, you should reach Kampala or Entebbe later in the afternoon or evening. If you are catching an international flight from Entebbe that evening, book a late departure to allow enough time for the journey. For a more relaxed finish, you can also spend the night around Entebbe and fly out the following day.
