Discover Rwanda’s mountain gorillas and golden monkeys on this 4-day safari from Kigali, taking you into Volcanoes National Park for two remarkable primate encounters in the Virunga Mountains. Spend up to one hour observing a habituated mountain gorilla family in the forest, then return the following day to track golden monkeys moving through the park’s beautiful bamboo vegetation. With 3 nights near Musanze, private transfers and experienced park ranger-guides, this safari offers a rewarding introduction to Rwanda’s mountain wildlife. The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kigali through Rwanda’s rolling hills to the volcanic highlands of the northwest. Gorilla trekking takes you into the forested mountain slopes, where each encounter is shaped by the movements of the family you visit. Golden monkey tracking offers a different experience, with smaller, energetic primates feeding and leaping through the bamboo. This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to enjoy 2 distinctive primate activities without the demands of a longer safari or a strenuous volcano summit hike.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Kigali Arrival and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your safari driver-guide will welcome you and introduce you to the journey ahead. If your flight arrives early enough, begin with a short visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The memorial commemorates victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and provides important historical context for understanding modern Rwanda. After the visit, or directly from the airport if you arrive later, travel northwest towards Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The journey generally takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Kigali, depending on traffic, road conditions and the location of your lodge. Along the way, pass through Rwanda’s rolling hills, cultivated valleys and rural communities. As you approach Musanze, the Virunga volcanoes rise above the surrounding farmland, creating a beautiful backdrop to the journey. Arrive at your lodge and settle into your room. Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the mountain scenery. In the evening, your driver-guide will explain the following morning’s gorilla trekking arrangements, including the briefing time, recommended clothing and what to carry into the forest.
Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Musanze.
Meals: Dinner, subject to arrival time and the confirmed booking.
Day 2, Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today is the highlight of your Rwanda gorilla safari. After an early breakfast, travel to the gorilla trekking briefing point at Kinigi, where park officials will check your permit and explain the rules for visiting mountain gorillas. You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and introduced to the ranger-guides who will accompany your group. Depending on the family’s location, you may drive to a separate trailhead before beginning the trek. The walk takes you through the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains, where bamboo stands, thick vegetation and montane forest provide habitat for mountain gorillas. The duration of the trek varies. Some families are reached after a relatively short walk, while others require several hours of hiking over muddy, steep or uneven terrain. As you move through the forest, your ranger-guides will follow signs of gorilla activity and explain the surrounding environment. Once your assigned gorilla family is located, you will have up to one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. You may see young gorillas playing near their mothers, adults feeding on vegetation or a silverback resting while keeping watch over the group. The experience is carefully managed to protect both visitors and gorillas. Your ranger-guide will ensure that you follow the required viewing distance and conservation rules. After the encounter, begin the walk back to the trailhead and reunite with your driver-guide. Return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation. Spend the afternoon resting after the trek and enjoying the views of the Virunga Mountains.
Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Musanze.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.
Day 3, Golden Monkey Tracking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, return to Volcanoes National Park for a guided golden monkey tracking experience. Golden monkeys are among the most distinctive primates of the Virunga Mountains, recognised by their golden-orange colouring, dark limbs and lively behaviour. After a briefing from park rangers, travel to the designated trailhead and begin walking into the forest. Golden monkeys are often found in bamboo vegetation, where they feed on shoots, leaves and other available food. Unlike mountain gorillas, which may spend long periods resting or feeding quietly, golden monkeys are frequently active and move quickly between the bamboo stems. As your group approaches the monkeys, you may hear movement in the vegetation before seeing their bright colouring among the green bamboo. Once the habituated group is located, enjoy the permitted observation period while following your ranger-guide’s instructions. Watch the monkeys feeding, grooming and moving through the forest. The tracking experience is often less physically demanding than a difficult gorilla trek, although walking conditions depend on the group’s location, terrain and weather. After the activity, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Spend the afternoon enjoying the mountain scenery or relaxing at the lodge.
Accommodation: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Musanze.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.

Day 4, Transfer to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the journey back to Kigali. The drive generally takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and your lodge’s location. Travel through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, passing cultivated hills, small villages and rural communities. If your flight schedule allows, enjoy a short sightseeing visit in Kigali, stop for lunch or browse a local craft market for souvenirs. Travellers interested in the Dian Fossey grave hike should arrange it as a separate activity, ideally with an additional overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park, rather than attempting to fit it into an ordinary departure day. Your driver-guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. For early morning departures, an additional overnight stay in Kigali is recommended. Your 4-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari comes to an end, leaving you with memories of 2 remarkable primate encounters in the Virunga Mountains.
Meals: Breakfast. Other meals depend on the confirmed booking and departure schedule.
