Uganda is a very beautiful East African country. It is land locked, and lies between the two east African great rift valleys. Uganda is also crossed by the equator and therefore exists in both the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere of the world at the same time. Uganda is bordered by Kenya to the East, Tanzania to the South, Rwanda to the Southwest, Uganda safari Democratic Republic of Congo to the West and Sudan to the North. Accommodation.
Uganda has good hotels ranging from 5 stars to comfortable lodges. Every budget is well catered for. Throughout the rest of the country and in game parks and reserves, guest houses and lodges are available. For our clients, we book the best accommodation available. We use Kampala as the base from which we operate all of our itineraries and packages. We work closely with many top hotels and resorts in the city and upcountry.
Airports.
Uganda has one International Airport. It is based in Entebbe and operates most of the flights in and out of Uganda. A number of international airlines fly direct to Entebbe. Some of them being South Africa Airways, British Airways, Kenya Airways and others. Many towns also have an airstrip as do most National Parks and Game Reserves. Uganda also has several domestic charter companies to choose from.
Money Issues.
Uganda has several banks that operate within. Many of them are renowned international banks like Barclays, Standard Chartered and Stanbic. There are also local banks and Forex bureaus that operate within Kampala and across the country. Banking hours are usually from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday. Forex is easily convertible. There is also a strong presence of many international money forwarding companies like Western Union and Money gram. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, but it is best to carry cash when heading upcountry. The shilling is the currency used. It exists in denominations of 1000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 Uganda shillings notes. However, there are coins available for smaller denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Uganda shillings.
Clothes and weather.
Due to Uganda’s weather conditions, it is advisable to bring Light clothing and strong studded shoes and denim jeans if you can. Preferably short sleeved T-shirts and some long sleeved shirts for evenings. Also, heavy clothes and jackets are advised for safari nights as it can get cold sometimes. Uganda’s position on the world map gives it a fairly hot constant climate. It’s usually hot by during the day, though most evenings are nice and warm.
Transport.
Most of the roads within the towns are in good condition. 4 wheel drive vehicles may be required for up-country use, especially in game parks and also during the rainy seasons. There is a large array of adequate transport available for hire within the country. Self-drive vehicles other than saloon cars are also available.
Health Issues.
Yellow Fever vaccinations are a must when traveling to Uganda. Also it is advisable to take anti-malarial tablets, especially during the rainy season. Most prescription drugs are available in prescription stores throughout the country. Personal insurance is advised.
Gorilla Tracking
The minimum age for one to go gorilla tracking is 15. One must get a permit from the authorities to track gorillas and each permit costs about $ 600 per person per day for Bwindi National Park. The same price is applicable for the Mgahinga park. While we can guarantee acquisition of a gorilla tracking permit, maximum time allowed with the gorillas will not exceed one hour.
Uganda Visas.
Visas for Uganda can be procured from most of the national the entry points including Entebbe Airport. The cost for a visa is usually $50 USD. If you are traveling from Kenya or Rwanda, it is advisable for you to obtain the Single East African Visa which cost USD 100 and allows you to enter Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.
