Nature and wildlife in Selous game reserve

By May 22, 2014Uncategorized

Selous Game Reserve is located 350 kilometers south of Dar es Salaam covering about 55,000 square kilometers and it is said to be the largest animal sanctuary in the world and with one of the largest diversity animals and most of these are antelopes which are divided into more than fifteen subspecies and the kob is a genus which has three subspecies, all these living in Selous.

The kob also called the kobus is an aquatic antelope which starts its life after a gestation period of eight months. So as a calf, they tend to stays in hiding to protect themselves from the carnivores and they depend mainly on milk from a mother for the first four months of their lives before its mother introduces it into the herd where it will continue to be under protection for about six months.

The social and reproductive organization of the kob varies depends on the area where they live, resources and weather. In average and the low population densities, males establish conventional territories and do not travel much. The adult males try to establish their territories in the best habitat available in a particular area which is occupied by herds of females and their young ones while herds flow and change in size and structure as individuals travel from one area to another to find green vegetation and water in a distant location.

Meanwhile, the non-territorial males, specifically the young males stay in bachelor herds and are segregated from the females by the territorial males. Two-thirds of the territorial males establish traditional territories while in the flood plains and then the rest live in clustered territories called leks that are smaller than a single traditional territory.

There are however some case where there are  real fights that involve the combatants clashing, pressing and twisting each other with their horns head-on  but a neighbor may attack from the rear or the side. These are some of the beautiful animals that you will definitely see when you visit the Selous game reserve in Kenya.
