Day 2 & 3 – Amboseli National Park, 2 nights Ol Kanjau
Morning flight to Amboseli National Park - justly famous for its big game including buffalo, elephant, lion, giraffe, hyena, cheetah and a variety of smaller carnivores and antelope species; and for its picturesque scenery, which benefits from the beautiful backdrop of snow covered Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. This region is home to the nomadic Masai people and you will see their circular manyattas (villages), surrounded by thorny scrub fences, scattered across the plains.

Ol Kanjau is a wonderful opportunity to stay in Mike and Judy Rainy’s private traditional tented camp on the edge of Amboseli National Park. The Rainys have kept the comfortable camp as authentic and simple as possible and it is surrounded by true bush land wilderness. Amboseli is home to a growing population of elephant and the Rainys will introduce you to several of 52 known matriarchal elephant families, this is a great place to “get up close and personal” with elephant!

Days 7 to 9 – Masai Mara, 3 nights Rekero Tented Camp
Morning charter flight to Nanyuki where you connect to the Masai Mara for a 3 night stay at Rekero.

Set amidst the teeming mass of wildlife in the Masai Mara, Rekero Tented Camp overlooks a migration crossing point on the Talek River and has views to the south and the plains of Tanzania. As there are only a few camps that take game drives on these southern plains, the feeling of wilderness is enhanced by the lack of traffic.

The camp is set up seasonally and accommodates 12 guests. The tents are well spaced and each has an en suite bathroom, flush loo, bucket shower (which is generously filled by your butler) and a small front porch with chairs, table with mirror, water, canvas hand basin & lantern.

The central living tent provides shaded under cover dining but meals are often enjoyed on the banks of the river in the shade of beautiful trees. The Beaton family have lived in the Mara area for generations and they own this camp in partnership with Jackson a local Masai who is renowned as one of the best guides in the area. Jackson, along with a company of professional cooks, camp attendants and guides will ensure that your safari experience is adventurous, comfortable, traditional and memorable.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve contains great concentrations of wildlife and adjoins Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains forming the northern end of the great migration ecosystem. From June to October you have a good chance of seeing the migratory, however, year round there is plenty of resident game including lion, leopard, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, jackal, topi, gazelles, impala and elephant. Hippos and crocodiles are plentiful in the rivers and the bird life is also abundant.

Day 10 – The Funzi Keys, 4 nights
After lunch fly to Ukunda where you transfer by road to Bodo, one hour away, and then by boat to Funzi Keys … getting there is all part of the adventure as your destination slowly reveals itself!

Funzi Keys, fronted by beach and surrounded by water, faces west offering dramatic views of the African sunset. Accommodation is in ten spacious cottages set along the high-water line and constructed from stone and thatch, with large netted windows open to the sea breezes. The airy rooms are imaginatively furnished with locally carved wood and artefacts, and in addition to a large four-poster bed, each room has a Jacuzzi, with a spectacular sea view. In front of each cottage is a private sitting area where a campfire is lit each night and guests can watch the sun setting with a drink in hand.

The main building reflects the influence of coastal Omani architecture, with Lamu ceilings and intricate plaster carvings on the walls. A day at The Funzi Keys is not structured – guests can do as little or as much as they choose. You may prefer to unwind on the wooden deck with surrounds the large free-form pool, watching the local fishing dhows sail by. Or you may choose to be active and partake in snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and water-skiing. Deep-sea fishing and scuba diving can be arranged. Boats are available to see the dolphins that regularly visit Funzi Creek and sunset dhow cruises and beach barbecues are a special feature of the hotel.
