Colobus monkey conservation project in Kenya

By September 23, 2014Kenya safaris

These monkeys are mainly heard in Rwanda’s Nyungwe forest but in Kenya is a conservation group that is rescuing colobus monkeys in the South Coast region. Lately, this Colobus Conservation group received the van worth SHS. 2.6 million from mining company- Base Titanium at Diani.

The group protects and rescues monkeys whenever they are in danger, so they will use this van to ease movement since the project runs in areas between Tiwi areas to Chale Island.

John Buckley who is the managing director of this Colobus Conservation group said Diani has about 400 colobus monkeys and all these are rescued from danger at one point in time.  the monkeys face danger of electrocution, hostility from human beings and being hit by cars on roads among so many others.

He said they work with the local community who call them whenever a monkey is injured or orphaned, have them taken to the animal clinic where they are treated and observed before being set free again.

Record show that Diani has the second largest population of colobus monkeys while Shimba Hills has the highest population of 1,500 of this rare monkey specie and they can be a good tourists’ attraction.
