rubanda-district-ugandaRubanda district is located within southwestern Uganda and its among the recently established districts in Uganda and it started operations this very year 2016 on 1st July. This district shares its borders with a couple of other districts including Kabale, Kanungu as well as Kisoro. Before Rubanda was declared an independent district, it was a county under the management of Kabale district however as part of the government scheme of bringing its services closer to people, Rubanga was declared an independent district. The biggest group of people living within this new district is the Bakiga, however you will also find Banyarwanda, Bafumbira as well as the Batwa who present a diversified cultural heritage that is worth exploring on your Safari in Uganda.

This beautiful district is found in the middle of the Kigezi highlands also famously known as the ‘Switzerland of Africa’. The amazing beauty of this district has led to several tourists from all parts of the world to visit over and over again. Its undulating hills comprising of sharp pointed peaks and deep verdant valleys not forgetting the beautiful terraced slopes all present an impressive breathtaking scenery. The hills are cultivated by the local farmers and as you drive through you will be able to see the different farmlands.

You will have an opportunity to visit Lake Bunyonyi which is the Second-deepest lake in Africa and its popular for its beautiful 29 small islands and because of this several people call it the ‘lake – of – thousand islands’. For many holidaymakers who have visited Uganda before, when you ask them about Lake Bunyonyi, surely they have a good memory about it.

Another thing worth mentioning about Rubanda district is that it has lot of high quality Iron ore near Muko – the local area iron smelters which is locally known as Abahesi and they make local tools including spears, hoes, knives as well as pangas through the traditional iron-smelting process. During our Uganda Cultural Safaris, holiday makers will have an opportunity to personally watch this interesting process. There are a couple of other mineral-reserves found within the district and these include: gold, tungsten, peat as well as wolfram.

Although Rubanda district  has a smaller area  covered with forest, it has the largest planted forest in the whole of Uganda – Mafuga as well as the only  pinus patula seed-stand found in Echuya Forest Reserve that has enabled the local people to begin planting trees extensively not only  domestic use but also for commercial purposes. Echuya Forest Reserve which is among the few surviving natural forests within Uganda having Bamboo is also thriving well in this District.

Not far from Rubanga District is the internationally renowned Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park home to the endangered mountain gorillas. There you can enjoy our amazing Gorilla Trekking Safaris as well as the exciting bird watching tours on your holiday in this part of the country.
