UWA OPENS A NEW ROUTE TO MARGHERITA PEAK.

By January 7, 2011Uncategorized

In April, a gap appeared on Mount Rwenzori in western Uganda on the glacier leading to the Margherita peak which was named by an Italian Duke, Prince Luigi Armedeo de Savoia more than 100 years ago in 1906 after the Queen of Italy and is the mountain’s highest summit. The gap is 6 meters therefore it has made climbing to this highest peak difficult when using the usual route.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) came up with a new route which is shorter and easier to get to the top of the mountain. Lillian Nsubuga, the Public Relations Officer of UWA said that the route was tested carefully so very safe for the mountain climbers and it takes around 26 minutes from the bottom to the top of the mountain because the route avoids the steep part of the mountain yet before it was 45 minutes. She said the new route has been created by putting ladders on the rocks at  Omwubutindo point to simplify the movement on the ice and with this new route, the peak will be approached from the western side of the mountain.

Lillian Nsubuga went on and said the authority officials and staff from Rwenzori Mountaineering Services will endure to make sure that the mountain climbers enjoy the experience to the top of the mountain.

Because of the climatic changes on the earth, UWA expects more effects on the Mount Rwenzori glacier so it has come up with long term plans by opening more sightseeing routes on the northern and southern ranges to increase the long difficult journey, viewing of the land scapes on the mountain and also to increase the tourist experience.
