Located on Lake Victoria, the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established as a safe home for orphaned chimpanzees as well as those rescued from wildlife poachers. It is among the best places to watch Chimpanzees in Uganda during your visit to this country. however not so long ago a birth was recorded at this sanctuary and in this article we are going to unveil to you the sad but interesting story of ‘baby’ Survivor born at this sanctuary.

Too bad, the night that his mother gave birth to him, he was injured by a couple of other adult chimpanzees. Fortunately the caregivers together with the veterinarians noticed it and immediately put their efforts together to see that they rejuvenate the life of this new born. They successful did so and right away conducted a full health check on this baby chimp. The findings revealed that he had sustained a number of injuries including a fractured arm. He was placed under the care of primary caregivers as he was closely monitored by the veterinarians, and there he progressively made a full physical and psychological recovery. Because of this, he was named ‘Survivor’.

The caregivers started integrating Survivor into the rest of the chimpanzee community and started with Afrika his mother with whom he bonded well. Afrika is a young female and low in rank within the community, however when the other females who are higher ranking were introduced to baby Survivor, they took over total care of this baby and loved him.

Today, Connie who is among the dominant females has taken over the care of Survivor and today is largely providing the very best care of this baby. Connie carries him each morning from the holding facility through the caged walkway to the out-door enclosure; she protects him in case any chimpanzee tries to grab food from Survivor or even attack him. Connie careful takes care of baby Survivor, she observes him as he plays with some other chimpanzees which have already been integrated to him including Afrika his mother.

Currently ‘baby’ Survivor believes and trusts in Connie’s ability to look after him even in cases when other chimpanzees threaten to danger him; for instance, there was this particular day when Survivor wasn’t pleased with Nagoti after Nagoti grabbed a papaya that the caregivers had through intentionally for Survivor; the baby-chimp gave Connie a sad gesture. In response Connie who had been watching whatever was happening fiercely barked and compelled Nagoti to actually drop the papaya frightened that she could be beaten.

Fortunately ‘baby’ Survivor” is starting to understand and learn the chimp community hierarchies, the chimpanzees which are more dominant and capable of safe guarding him. All this has come to a reality thanks to the great training offered by his adoptive mother Connie, who has also equipped this little chimp with the necessary survival skills especially in a larger community of chimpanzees.
