Tanzania to tighten security measures in the tourism site

The Tanzanian police force is yet to increase on the number of police officer by at least 240 more police officers and these will add up to the country’s 60-member tourism police force. This is according to Benedict Kitalika who is the Assistant Police Commissioner; she made the announcement last Tuesday on February 19th 2013 in Dar es Salaam.

She said they are soliciting for funds which will enable them train at least 240 police officers and instill in them skills of statement recording which could be used in court even in the absence of a tourist. This was during an interview with the Tanzania’s newspaper called The Citizen.

Kitalika is also the commander of the unit and says they need approximately 80 million shillings which is about $49,000 to carry out the training. The training will include teaching of a foreign language courses. It is very important for Tanzania to protect and improve on the tourism industry as it contributes about 17.5% of Tanzania’s gross domestic product and employs 500,000 people direct and 800,000 people indirect thus contributing largely to the development of the economy.
