SECURITY TO BE PLACED AT KASUBI TOMBS

By January 24, 2011Uncategorized

Kasubi Tombs is a world heritage site where Buganda kings are buried therefore it provides both historical and cultural information about the kingdom. On 16 March 2010, these royal tombs were burnt down whereby the cause of the fire is not yet known till now and three people were shot  but during the hearings ,the person behind the shooting  and those that  burnt the tombs have never been known. A big number of people have testified before the commission and a final report will be issued out before February 23 2011.

in 1966, President Milton Obote abolished  kingdoms  for  27 years  and in 1993,Museveni restored them but ever  since that time, the bond  between Buganda Kingdom and the government has never been better  because the current Kabaka(king) keeps on demanding for  the ownership of the 9,000 square miles of kingdom land in central Uganda and the central  government has rejected it.

The Major Gen Kale Kayihura who is the inspector general of the police of Uganda said security will be provided at the tombs only if the central government and the people of the Buganda kingdom trust each other. He said before the commission chaired by Justice George Engwau that because of the failure of kingdom to trust the government, it hasn’t been easy to place security at the historical site therefore the distrust should stop so that the tombs can be protected by the Uganda police instead of traditional guards.

The kingdom’s information minister Mr. Peter Mayiga said the Buganda kingdom wasn’t happy with the central government because of unsettled demands for the 9,000 square miles of land and this was the main reason that led to the shooting of three people when President Museveni visited the tombs after the fire.

Eng John Baptist Walusimbi the kingdom’s premier said an outside wall will be constructed around the land where the tombs are located to prevent intruders and to also to improve on the security at the site.

He also said water tanks will be established with automatic hydrants at the site so that they don’t rely on the water from Entebbe anymore and the revenue from visitors to be controlled by the treasurer of the kingdom.

The kingdom’s prime minister said the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the central government and the Buganda kingdom will meet on January 27 to agree on the responsibilities of managing the cultural site. Cultural safaris in Uganda
