Professional exams set for Rwanda’s tour guides

There are about 30 tour guides under their Rwanda Drivers and Safari Guides Association who had their bronze tour guide examinations yesterday and it was the very first set of its kind to be sat in Rwanda.  This bronze examination is the first set in a series of internationally recognized tour guide certification and after this, there are a series of training programmes that a guide has got to under go so that he can effectively do his job.   Bronze is the very first certificate, followed by silver, platinum and the highest is the gold, which is the highest.

Edwin Sabuhoro, the Chairman of the Tourism Chamber at the Private Sector Federation (PSF) mentioned that they are giving them these exams so that they can easily categories these guides according to their performance in the exams. There will also be more training programs so that they can get at least 100 tour guides sitting for bronze examinations before the end of 2012 and also their academic qualifications will reflect their salaries in their respective companies he added.

According to him, just like in any other professions where people are employed basing on their academic qualifications, all tour companies will be limited to employing qualified tour guides since they are expected to play a role in the development of the industry something that will market the tourism industry which is why they have got to be skilled.  Rwigamba Rica, the Head of Tourism and Conservation at Rwanda Development Board (RDB), observed that the proposal will help promote customer care among the guides.
