In Amboseli national park at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Amboseli National Park is one of the oldest national park in Kenya just a bout  260 km from Nairobi and close to the Kenya/Tanzania border just at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro  which is Africa’s highest snow-capped mountain. Amboseli was first a national Reserve in 1968 and became a National Park in 1974 composed of acacia woodlands, swamps, rocky thorn bushes and plains.

This park is a popular safari destination because it has a high population of wildlife and is an excellent place for bird watching because there are more than 400 bird species that live there, like the crakes, so many water birds like pelicans and kingfishers. There are also huge herds of African elephants like more than 900 and other wild animals include: the wildebeests, lions, zebras, monkeys, jackals, antelopes, leopards, cheetahs, warthogs, nocturnal porcupines, buffaloes and giraffes, among others.

Just like the Masai Mara national park, the Amboseli territory is land of the Maasai, who are legendary people of nomadic warriors and herdsmen. The Maasai community is well-known for maintaining their traditions and culture, they still live in the reserve areas surrounding the park, grazing their herds on the plains and they keep moving their households in their search for the best pastures and water for their animals.

Once you visit that park, you will have the best memories because it offers some of the best game-viewing opportunities in Kenya. You can clearly see the animals as they run around the park through the sparse vegetation which is due to long dry seasons. Animal spotting becomes very easy in the vast park land.

Despite the fact that the park is located in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the park is still dry and hot but the temperature varies slightly throughout the year. This makes January, February and June the best time to visit this park although there are animals all the time.
