How best to protect the Rhinos from extinction

By February 2, 2015Eastafrica safari news

Late in January, Conservationists and scientists met in Kenya to discuss ways through which they can successfully keep the rhinos safe from poachers most especially. The plan is to save the northern white rhinoceros from extinction because currently, there are only five Northern white rhinos remaining on the planet, three of which are in Ol Pejeta Conservancy in central Kenya and on is in zoos in the Czech Republic and the other in the United States.

The intend to work out what is feasible scientifically in the short time so said Richard Vigne, the  Ol Pejeta Conservancy chief executive officer while talking to. He said that the five remaining northern white rhinos are all elderly or incapable of natural reproduction and so the artificial reproduction way offers the only hope of preventing extinction.

They hope use the in-vitro fertilization, in which a test-tube embryo could be implanted in the womb of a surrogate southern white rhino which is a closely related rhinoceros subspecies. Past attempts at artificial rhino insemination in the Czech Republic but were not successful because the science was just not there yet, so said Richard.

Southern white rhinos have rebounded from a similar situation, with their numbers increasing from a few dozen at the end of the 19th century to about 20,000 today, the result of sustained protection and conservation efforts. Note that this rhino is the most endangered species of large animal on the planet. ” It is very possible that soon we will witness the end of a species which is not good at all especially for tourism business,” Richard Vigne said.
