Hiking Mount. Kenya

By March 2, 2015kenya tourism news

East African countries are blessed with a number of natural attractions among which are the mountains like Kilimanjaro that is attracting so many hikers lately; there is the Uganda’s Rwenzori, Elgon as well as Mt. Kenya in Kenya. There are more people that have become more interested in mountain hiking and there are number of hikers that try out Mt. Kenya.  Much as it is an interesting and adventurous activities, you need to be alert about the altitude sickness because the higher you get, the more difficult it becomes to breath.   There is usually little oxygen to inhale from up there and KWS has to ask their rapid response team to quickly help those that may be having problems from up there.

According to the records from Kenya Wildlife Services, there were over 27.000 visitors that visited Mt. Kenya National Park in a year and most of them are interested in hiking and climbing due to the easy access to high elevations by vehicle just before they get out and start walking. One of the problems with acute mountain sickness is the ease how high climbers and hikers can reach by vehicle. That robs them of the time the body needs to acclimatize and get used to less oxygen and when they start walking, its like oxygen is sudden cut off  and so they get sick.

Mt. Kenya National Park is also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and recently expanded following the fact that its now includes the conservancy of Lewa Downs, giving it more fame and therefore attracts more visitors from both East Africa and over seas.
