Explore the world’s longest river- the Nile in Uganda

Source-of-the-NileWhen you talk about the River Nile, you are actually talking about Uganda’s former capital city called Jinja in which the source of River Nile is found, and this you will see while on your Safari in Uganda. The Nile is the longest river in the whole world flowing from its source in Jinja, through countries in the north eastern side of Africa and pouring into the Mediterranean Sea. It gets the name Nile from a Greek word Nile which means valley. This river covers about 6696 km in length and it supplies 9 countries but Uganda, Sudan and Ethiopia as well as Egypt get the biggest share of its benefits to an extent that it is considered Egypt’s backbone since it is the biggest water supply and Egypt is a really dry country.

Visit the Source of the Nile

The Arms of River Nile in Uganda

The Nile is composed of 2 main twigs (arms) namely the Blue Nile and the White Nile. The Blue Nile joins from Khartoum forming what is called the central part which is composed of the Cataract Nile as well as the Egyptian Nile. Meanwhile the White Nile is the longest, it is then divided into the lake plateau area and the sudd as well as the central-Sudan Area.

Importance of the River Nile

This river is of great significance to so many countries because it is playing a huge role in their growth and development. Countries like Uganda have the river as a source of revenue through tourism, fishing, water supply, among others and then Egypt, a country that highly depends on the river because it’s the source of the water to the whole country. The Nile is Egypt’s source of electricity, it supports farming through irrigation something it highly depends on since it’s a dry country, there is fishing done, among other benefits.

What to do on the River Nile in Uganda

Kayaking, White Water Rafting, Bungee Jumping ad Fishing: The river Nile in Jinja is attached with an intriguing history which is why there are so many tourists interested in visiting to learn about its story and enjoy other activities done on the river like the Kayaking, grade five White Water Rafting, fishing and Boat Rides as well as Bungee Jumping which are some of the activities done on the Nile. A big turn up of tourists leads to huge sum of revenue for the government thus the growth and development.

Nile Boat Cruise: To have a perfect adventure on the Nile, you have to go for a Nile Boat Cruise just below the strong and while on the lake, you will be able to see the real beauty of the river, see the aquatic life like the hippos, crocodiles and there will be also the water birds.

Visit The Sezibwa Falls And The  Bujali Falls: When you visit Jinja for the Nile, you can also check other places like the sezibwa falls, the  Bujali falls where divers swim through the rapid falls only holding onto a jerry-can which is crazy but amazing.   You can also go mountain-biking, Quad biking, river boarding and so many other activities.  This is the best place to visit for any water board activities which are really exciting and can have additional activities like villages walks, forest walks along the River banks, among others.

Explore the Power Murchison Falls

As the Nile meander through Uganda, it does meet Lake Kyoga and this also provides the Nile with very  Murchison-falls-boat-ridefresh water as it continues northwards into Murchison Falls National Park,  where it form the famous Murchison falls with height of about 43 meter.  Around this spot, activities like game viewing, spot fishing are done. You can expect to see animals like hippos and crocodiles for the water animals, there will be the buffaloes, elephants, waterbucks, among others you can find in the savannah grassland areas along the banks and also so many different bird species, even the shoebill stork may be sighted.  More to that, you can go for a nature walk, hike from the bottom to the top of the falls and can take as many pictures as you want to.  From Murchison, the Nile continues into Sudan and the Egypt before getting to the Mediterranean Sea.

While in Murchison, besides the falls and the wildlife in the park, you can also do some primate watching. Visit the Budongo and Kaniyo Pabidi forest which is a natural forest with lots of tree species for Chimpanzee trekking. This forest is a home to hundreds of chimpanzees and it’s the only place you can get to see these amazing primates while in Murchison Park. During the chimpanzee trek which is done either in the morning at 8 or at 2pm, you will also spot lots of bird species yellow-footed flycatcher or Ituri-batis and many more other which means the bird watchers will find Murchison falls park very interesting.
