By September 16, 2016Kenya

aircraft-crash-malindiYesterday a Cessna 172 registered 5Y-GSM, crashed close to Malindi during a flight training exercise. The Manufacturer’s Serial Number of this plane is 152-81599 and was found from the aircraft registry site that is readily available for public info.

This plane was assembled back in 1978 and currently had 38 years of existence, by itself not a problem provided that regular recommended maintenance is done to maintain this aircraft in an airworthiness state.

It is said that the plane developed an unspecified technical problem during in a training flight outside of Malindi shortly after it had taken off and ultimately was able to land in a compound of one of the primary schools within the area.

Fortunately it did not injure anyone on the ground although the propeller together with the undercarriage sustained some damages.

However the instructor pilot together with the trainee sustained injuries and were rushed off to the taken to one of the local hospitals.

The series of crashes of light aircraft, first near Naivasha which has by now cost two lives and then a few days ago in Nairobi, where another training aircraft of similar make crash landed and overturned after a technical malfunction, has again raised serious doubts on the capacity of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority to exercise effective oversight on maintenance of aircraft as all three crashes appear to have been caused by technical issues.

on the other hand, Police helicopters were not also spared from this kind of accidents as another helicopter crashed within Nairobi the capital cilty of Kenya, equally raising several questions among which were queries questioning the competence of the pilot and the helicopter’s maintenance, yet KCAA continues to keep silent and dodge all rising questions coming from the general public.
