African Wildlife Foundation Elects New President from Uganda

The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) recently announced that it has elected Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya – a Ugandan local as the new President. Mr. Sebunya promised to offer a distinct policy plan for wildlife conservation as part of the future of Africa, making sure that Africa’s growth and development plan for the continent includes room and proper protection for ‘her’ natural heritage

In his words Mr. Sebunya said that he is very excited to be serving as president especially now when the economies of the African continent are rising, and when crucial decisions are actually being made concerning how Africa must control ‘her’ natural resources reliably and with good accountability. he went on to say that Africa is undergoing a significant change, and we should assist to guide this ongoing change so that it not only benefits the wildlife but also the people living on this continent.

Sebunya started his career as a project manager working at WaterAid and later as a relief-program-officer working with Oxfam UK. Starting with his position as the Associate Director at the US Peace Corps within Uganda, his career started to concentrate more on wildlife conservation. Later on he served as the country program coordinator under the International Union for Conservation of Nature- IUCN, as well as a senior policy & planning adviser with Conservation International.

Back in 2006, he shifted to Washington DC where he served as the Programs Director with AWF. He created and implemented an innovative legislative program to interact with U.S. lawmakers on the concerns affecting Africa’s conservation as well as development. Earlier on in 2013, he served as the Chief of Party under the Uganda Biodiversity Program before moving higher the ladder to serve as president at AWF

Kaddu Kiwe Sebunya received holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social and Political Science from Makerere University – Uganda plus a Masters of Science degree in Sustainable Resource Management and Policy from Imperial College London, a Master-of-Arts degree in Law, Policy & Diplomacy from The Fletcher School Tufts University.
