Kalema's Prison Ditch | Uganda Cultural Tours

By April 19, 2016Uganda

Kalema-prison-ditchThis historical cultural site is a ditch which was in the 1880s and was used during the kingship of Kabaka Kalema as a maximum prison. When Kabaka Kalema took over the Buganda throne amidst religious conflict which were happening within the kingdom at the time that led to the then ruining king Kabaka Mwanga running to exile, Kalema did not feel safe because of the resistance he was getting from his brothers who as well were thinking about taking over the throne. So what he did, he captured all of them and kept them in captivity in the Kateleke prison ditch together with other prisoners of the kingdom. Sadly the captives were afterwards murdered in cold blood.

Today the place is a commonly visited site during a Uganda Cultural Safari. The serene site has large tree shades has a circular large ditch of approximately 70 meters in diameter. The Kateleke prison ditch is found in Nsangi just a couple of Kilometers from the capital Kampala along the Kampala Masaka highway. After the turn off the highway, it is then approximately a thirty minutes drive along a dirt road.
