World wide demand for Ivory is affecting wildlife

By March 28, 2013Tanzanian tourism news

Tanzania report a re high increase in the number of animals that are killed by poacher most especially the rhinos and the elephants. This problem is attributed to the high demand for ivory in international markets most especially in the Asian countries thus destroying the destroying the natural resources in Tanzania. Mr. Evarist Ndikilo who is the Mwanza Regional Commissioner said that they have now involved the local communities to help stop those markets; save wildlife and natural attractions from extinction. “Tanzania is second richest country in natural attractions after Brazil, but that status will soon change if poaching is not stopped.

It is unfortunate that Southern Asia and Far East provides good markets for game products including elephant tusks, rhino trophies, skin and hides but they have not been touched.

Meanwhile Mr. Allan Kijazi who is the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Managing Director, said during the workshop which also invited regional commissioners and district commissioners, directors of game reserves from Saanane Island, Mahale, Serengeti, Katavi, Gombe, Rubondo Island and regional administrative officers, among other participants that they intensions of finding the best means of protecting the reserved areas thus the reason they have involved the local communities living near by.

He believes that involving the locals will be very helpful, they will be able to report all people that they may see and also try and rescue the animals when they are being attacked. All they have to do is make the locals realize the importance of protecting the wildlife. The number of elephants in the two wildlife sanctuaries in Tanzania has reduced by about 42% in a period of three years and reports from Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park indicate that elephant numbers had reduced to 43,552 in total by 2009 compared 74,900 as they were in total by 2006 which is threatening.
