The Boomu Women’s Group Promote Cultural Tourism in Uganda

boomu-women-group-bandaIn the green plains about 200 meters to the southern gate into Murchison Falls National Park are several traditional Bandas which have attracted the attention of many international travelers coming from Europe, and part of North America that come to visit this park on their Safari in Uganda.

a group of women known as the Boomu have recognized that although the grass thatched huts smeared with mud in no way appealing as an accommodation option to Ugandans, foreign travelers have found these very traditional and exciting to sleep in as they offer the true feel of an African Safari Experience.

The owners recognize that the center receives world travelers no matter the season during their Uganda Safari.

Visitors are often intrigued by the thrilling village walks, the yummy local food as well as the uniquely built African Bandas.

This Boomu community lives in Kigaragara village and its only 35-minutes drive from Masindi town, and a quick walk to Kaniyo Pabidi – a great place to track chimpanzees as well as Murchison National park where you can enjoy great game viewing. Their Centre is a standard demonstration of several other identical centres that have the prospective to up-lift Uganda’s cultural tourism.

The Boomu Bandas can accommodate as many as 30 people. Each of the bandas is fitted with either a single or a double bed, and there are also four open showers. At the Center, they prepare good tasty dishes that include some of the local foods enjoyed here in Uganda. egg plant stew, sweet potatoes, rice and matooke are among the local food you will enjoy which will give you a true taste of Uganda the pearl of Africa.

Similar to the objectives of any community tourism project, the Boomu Center has come up with a number of benefits for the local community living there and among them are: creating a market for the craft and art-pieces made by the locals (which are commonly bought as souvenirs by tourists), market for their food stuff, as well as employment opportunities and above all create a platform for inter-cultural interactions. Some of the profits that have been accumulated from this project have been used to build a primary as well as a nursery school in the area.
