TARANGIRE WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF ELEPHANTS.

By February 13, 2012uganda safari news

There is a reportedly high rate of elephant increase in the Tarangire National park which is apparently increasing at the rate of seven per cent every year which is the maximum rate recorded ever  in the  Jumbo production rate that is done every year in African.

Dr Charles Foley who is the Director of the Tarangire Elephant Project, Dr Charles Foley has been doing a study about these huge mammals in the park for about twenty years and his finds indicate that the rate at which elephant grow is almost 175 mammals per year and this is the highest rate in Africa although the jumbos ‘is still low. The Tarangire Eco-system also combines the Lake Manyara National Park which is about 20,000 square kilometers and it is supposed to be for the Jumbos’ density although it is very low when compared to the rest so says Dr Foley the Assistant Director of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) programme in Tanzania at the same time.

Currently, there are 3200 elephants in the Tarangire eco-system and considering the seven per cent increase of every year from the 2500 jumbo population counted during the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) census of 2009.

Tanzania had about 110,000 elephants coming after Botswana with 123, 000 which has the highest numbers of Jumbos in Africa. However, Dr Foley, Selou Game Reserve had got 45,000 elephants therefore the highest number of  large mammals in the country, in second position is Ruaha National park with 35,000 jumbos. Tarangire National Park, together with Monduli, Babati and Simanjiro Districts in Arusha and Manyara regions, is the sixth biggest national park in the country after Ruaha, Serengeti, Mikumi, Katavi and Mkomazi.

This park got its name from Dr Charles Foley the all-season Tarangire River which meanders through the eco-system and it is the main source of water for all the wildlife in the park especially in the dry season.
