Lake Natron the home to millions of Flamingos

By November 15, 2012Tanzanian tourism news

There are over a million flamingos that do migrate to Lake Natron in Tanzania for purpose of breeding every year. According to the records, about three-quarters of the total population of lesser flamingos in the world live in East Africa and majority of them are found at Lake Natron which is their nesting site.

This lake has islands where the birds raise young away from predators like hyenas and at the time when the water levels are too low the birds will then abandon their nests and will seen at the shores. The Lesser flamingos are the smallest in size and the commonest type of flamingo in the world. Usually, these birds fly in large numbers from other areas in Africa.

Sometime back, the dry weather caused drought therefore the birds did not have very successful breeding period but this year conditions look better and hopefully the breeding is a success.

According to Sarah Ward, a student from the University of Southampton and is studying flamingos, If the breeding attempt is a success that means there will a huge increase in the number of flamingo population however with the so many possible obstacles to overcome, it is likely that we will have to wait and hope for good conditions in the future that favors breeding.
