Akagera-baby-lionsGreat news coming from Rwanda show that that the great efforts to re-introduce lions back into Akagera National Park which is the only savanna wildlife park in the country are actually showing very good results. A joint venture project was done by the Rwanda Development Board together with African Parks which manages this park last year, an lions where re-introduced.

This wildlife project was unfortunately first turned away by a number of misguided conservationists with Kenya, who were able to ruin an all set deal to deliver a breeding stock of healthy lions into Rwanda’s Akagera. However, African Parks together with Rwanda Development Board went ahead and did the right thing by pursuing their vision

Fortunately two private wildlife reserves in South Africa joined in and were willing to help. 7 lions that included 2 males plus 5 females were transferred into Rwanda and introduced in the park. Akagera National Park is one of the most visited destinations for anyone taking a Safari in Rwanda. Before the transfer of these lions, the perimeter fence surrounding the park was well strengthened and totally made wildlife proof to guarantee that the lions don’t escape from the park to the nearby communities.

Just a couple of weeks back, news merged that one of the female lions had produces three healthy cubs and then it was also mentioned that some other lionesses were as well expecting to give birth.

The latest news from Akagera park has confirmed that and additional four (4) cubs have been produced and this shot the population of lions in the park to a total of 14 which is twice the re-introduced number of 7 in just one year.

Now everyone is early waiting upon the third pregnant lioness, while the other two females are also showing some signs of giving birth in time to come.

In a similar development, it has been confirmed that plan are being made to transfer rhinos back into Akagera National Park, which will fill the gap another yet formerly extinct species. Several observers say that once the relocation of rhinos has been completed, the variety of wildlife in the park would have greatly increases, and Rwanda will be able to market Akagera as a Big Five Rwanda safari destination, thus increasing the number of tourists entering the country.
