pangolin-scalesYesterday, Pangolin scales weighing 100 kilograms were intercepted in Nairobi. It is estimated that these are worth a minimum of sixty (60) million Kenya Shillings. it is reported that this sizeable consignment was being moved from Yaounde  the capital city of Cameroon and was confiscated in Nairobi just before it loaded onto the connecting flight to the destination country which was later learned to be Bangkok. Actually besides Malaysian, Hong Kong and Vietnamese ports, Bangkok is among the main points of wildlife trafficking found in the Far East.

Just in the first months of this very year, half a ton of these Pangolin scales was confiscated thanks to the great monitoring and inspection efforts of wildlife conservationists. The great demand for these scales has greatly threatened the survival of these unique animals.

Kenya Wildlife Authority staff members together with security officers, airport-customs officers, along with sniffer dogs have now and again intercept illegal cargos including blood ivory and rhino horns amog several other wildlife products that are prohibited and this has made Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport a place to avoid among smugglers as they try to smuggle their illegal items.
