Entebbe Town a Good Stopover on your Uganda Safari

entebbe-tourist-attractionsEntebbe is a beautiful town found on the shores of Lake Victoria and its here that the only international airport in Uganda is found. Form the capital city Kampala to Entebbe town; it is approximately one hour’s drive. Also the United Nations UN has a depot or staging area in Entebbe where it holds its heavy machinery plus vehicles used in its peacekeeping mission in central African. This town offers a relaxed cool stop-over for those traveling into Kampala for a Safari in Uganda or those heading to the airport for their flight out of the country. The clean, well secured streets, vintage colonial gardens and Lake Victoria in the back ground offer a relaxed peaceful atmosphere.

Entebbe is probably most well-known for the Israeli commando attack on 4th July 1976, when more than 100 mostly Jewish hostages that had been captured on a hijacked France airplane were rescued. That rescue mission was complicated because the Ugandan president at that time – Idi Amin, was in favor of the hijackers. More than Forty Ugandan soldiers were slain by the Israelis as they carried out the rescue mission.

Today, Entebbe holds the presidential official residence – State House Uganda, which is located on top of a hill looking over the Entebbe town center.

Visit the Entebbe botanical gardens

Go on a guided tour in the beautiful Entebbe botanical garden. This tour takes one and a half hours at a charge of 10,000 Uganda Shillings per person. during thi tour you will be able to see several birds, colored butterflies, ants, dragon-flies, flowers, various trees plus different plants. it is assumed that a section of the original Tarzan-movie was actually shot here. as you walk through the gardens, the lingering smell of wild nutmeg and cinnamon fill the air..

See the Vervet monkey

A Vervet monkey has a characteristic black face and a side of white hair, whereas the rest of its body is mainly covered with grey fur. The male vervet monkeys are larger in size and have a longer body. Normally they live in huge groups and really near human settlements. although they are a fairly a small monkey when fighting for dominant positions within their group, they become  very aggressive. They are an amazing type of monkeys worth seeing and are not aggressive to man unless if attacked or when one gets really close to them particularly to their babies.

Visit the Uganda Wildlife Educations Center / Zoo

The zoo is a great place to enjoy day time tours as the place is large with different wildlife species including plants, animals and birds. The animals here spend some time at the zoo and after they have been rendered fit and well trained to survive on their own, they are realized back into the natural habitats. Some of the animals you will see include: the Lion, Giant forest hog, White Rhino, Baboons, Buffalo, Nile Crocodile, Eland, Rock Python, Waterbuck, Tortoise, Impala, Vervet Monkey, Bush duiker, Bush Pig, Marsh terrapins, Bush buck, Grey Checked Mangabey, Bohor Reedbuck, Nile monitor lizard, Warthog, Red-Tailed Monkey, Uganda Kob, Patas Monkey, Cape Buffalo, Spotted Hyena, Olive monkey, Leopard, De Brazza monkey, Spotted Necked Otter, Colobus monkey, Serval Cat,

Among the Birds are: the Ostrich, Peacock, Owl, Crested Crane, African Fish Eagle, Egyptian goose, African Grey Parrot, Shoebill stork, Helmeted Guinea Fowl and  Marabou Stork,

See Lake Victoria

Entebbe town sits on the shores of the largest fresh water lake in Africa – Lake Victoria. As you drive to or from the airport, you will be able to see the beautiful shores of Lake Victoria. There are several beaches in Entebbe which you can visit and enjoy the cool lake breeze, enjoy the waters and the sand on the shore.

The State House of Uganda

Along the main road from Kampala to Entebbe you will find the gates leading into the State House. The white painted presidential palace elegantly stands in Entebbe town and at night the lights in its gardens and on the fence light up the entire place.

The Crowned Crane

Locally known as the Uganda crane, the Crowned Crane is a very beautiful bird and commonly seen in Entebbe. This unique bird is actually embedded in the National flag of Uganda as well as on the Coat of Arms. The bird is approximately a meter tall and weighs on average 4 kg. Its body is mainly covered with grey feathers and the wings are covered with white feathers. Its head has is crowned with firm golden feathers. This beautiful bird is much loved because of its booming call, jumping, dancing and bowing behavior

Visit the different Beaches.

There are several beaches in Entebbe town on the shores of Lake Victoria. Some also have luxury beach hotels. Some of the prominent beaches there include: the Resort Beach, Lido beach, imperial botanical, anderita beach and Aero beach among several others.

Visit the Ngamba Chimpanzee Island

This Island is found on lake Victoria and it offer a safe refugee to orphaned chimpanzees. By visiting this place you will get an opportunity to track the chimpanzee. It is a very beautiful place worth visiting on your Safari in Uganda.
