Mgahinga National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest, covering an area of 33sq.kilometres, and probably the most scenic National Park in Uganda. Located in the extreme south-western corner of Uganda, it borders with the Republic of Rwanda in the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.
The Park is made of three extinct volcanoes in the northern slopes of the three northernmost Virunga Volcanoes, which include; Mt. Muhavura, Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabinyo, part of the large conservation area where Dian Fossey and others have studied the mountain gorilla.
Access
The park can be reached by road through kabale and kisoro, 540 km from Kampala (Uganda's capital city). This takes about 8 hours drive, because the section between kabala and kisoro is very windy and mountainous. one can also use a charter aircraft and land in kisoro.
Get a great overview of the area and the huge cones of the virunga volcanoes that dominate the landscape by walking up the viewpoint (platform), after Ntebeko Gate.
Being a mountainous area, the park experiences afromontane vegetation and a cool climate, a great biological importance because throughout the climatic changes of the Pleistocene ice ages providing a refuge for mountain plants and animals, which moved up or down the slopes.
