The Masai want government to help them get their land back

The Maasai people from around the Masai Mara game reserve, the great Trans Mara region, Narok County have threatened to disrupt the tourism activities in this popular Masai Mara Game Reserve. James Orengo the Lands Minister in Kenya said that these people have come to this extent because they asked they need the government to react to their demand of giving them back their 26,000 hectares of land  but so far the government has not done any thing about which is making them angry.

They say they have up to July 24th and should it pass before the Minister James Orengo have got their land back from those that want to steal it away from them, they will have to block all routes to the famous Masai Mara reserve. On this piece of land are five group ranches under the Ilkareshe Group Trust and Mr. Orengo promised to visit the community and see this piece of land on July 24 following  and solve the problem between these community people and these two individuals who are trying to steal their land which  was given to them in 1975. The Ilkareshe Group Trust secretary Ratik ole Kuyawa mentioned while addressing the press at Chester House, Nairobi Kenya on Friday that there will not be any game drive done in the region for a while.

Ratik ole Kuyawa was with some university students from various institutions led by Raphael Maleto the Kenya Maa University Students chairman and these swore to go on hunger strike, join the community so that they can help them in paralyzing tourism activities in the Masai Mara reserve if that is the only way they will get government to meet their demands. This land that they are fighting for has ranches like Kimintet, Oloirien and Kerinkani which contain Kichwa Tembo, Butlter, Skyship and little governors’ camps plus an airstrip where crafts land if the tourists use air means. That same piece of land has the popular Masai Mara Game reserve which attracts about a million tourists in a year. They need their land back because it was given to them for grazing and they can not allow any one to take it away from them.
