Kenya tourism sector misses out on government funds.
Areport from Kenya has shown that the Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association is not happy about the government s decision to leave out the tourism sector and not allocate the required amount of funds to run the industry although the sector contributes immensely to the national and according to them, the government does not appreciate the role played by the industry in the economy. Mohamed Hersi the chairperson MTCA was so bitter following Njeru Githae, minister for Finance’s failure to allocate a single cent to Kenya Tourism Board which is major tourism marketing giant in Kenya.
He said yesterday that the government seems not be serious about the tourism that is why the industry was also not mentioned any where in the national budget besides being denied money for marketing. He added that they allocated almost Sh240million to infrastructure by still were not clear about how Mombasa was to benefit from the funding and yet it is a renowned tourism hub. It is not good to allocate Sh240 billion to infrastructure without clearly telling the public how the Moi International Airport will be expanded. There are so many roads that are not in good shape like the Taita to Voi road and the Jomvu Miritini road.
He added that the money will all be diverted towards the construction of the Dongo Kundu by pass leaving out these very import infrastructures that are a boost to tourism in the region. He said that it was such a huge mistake for the government to ignore such an important the sector especially at this time when KTB needs more money to market Kenya ahead of elections. It is funny that the government expects to get revenue from an industry in which it has not invested and yet it is very necessary to allocate a reasonable amount to boost the industry since KTB is at a very critical time when we are having elections, grappling with insecurity and many other hindrances he added.
